[ There's a loud shriek from the living area of their loft above the Raccoon Room. Wu is on the couch, starring at his phone with his mouth agape, and he's practically vibrating. Music comes out of the little speakers of his Omni and Fritter peers over his shoulder as they both watch this video. ]

[ There's about a fifty-fifty chance when Wu screams that something's actually wrong. Wu screams about a lot of things. Yesterday he was trying to fry an egg and cracked it onto the floor and screamed about that, and Mako had come running only to find Wu at the counter covered in yolk, perfectly fine.

So he still jumps a little up in the bedroom where he's scrubbing at a dark spot on the wall that will probably just need paint (the baseboards in here were terrifyingly dusty) and hurries to peer over the edge, only to see Wu... just fine, sitting on the couch, listening to very familiar music. ]

Ah.

[ Mako just snorts, leaning on the rail, watching this. ]

Haven't you already watched this?

September canoe of sadness

Ha ha ha haaalarious how something as innocent as picking up a feather can ruin your whole day. Feathers are cool as heck and magic feathers are even better, but ones that transport you to some crazy spirit river with big ol' carvings of a bird dude and seem super cool and great and then turn into something horrible..

Well. Bolin can probably leave that one. Or, he'd love to if only he'd known.

Somehow it is not at all surprising that he and Mako have ended up on the worst lazy river in existence. Even if they hadn't been next to each other!

Initial confusions aside, the boat is floating happily down the river with the barest traces of red beginning to thread through the otherwise crystal water. And while normally Bolin isn't super wild about being surrounded by an element that isn't his, he is 1, with Mako so everything will be fine, 2, just feeling super cozy and it's all okay, and 3, it's just a river and they're in some kind of canyon so it's not like he couldn't reach for the rocks if he needed to. Great, that means there's no reason to be worried, right? This is just a nice little magic boat ride?

Never Mind the bend in the river coming up (hahaha get it Never Mind) ah I'm a natural comic.

"Mako we are so lucky. First we land in this super cool world and now we won a magic boat ride. Do you think this is that guy in the cliff's way of saying heey welcome to my wooorld, come and see the sights! Man.. his tourism game is on point."

There is simply no way this is just a nice magic boat ride.

Mako has been through this song and dance too many times to be even remotely comfortable, even if it isn't exactly the same. Being transported suddenly and violently somewhere against your will never ends well.

"I don't know, bro," he says. Their voices echo oddly off the stone, coming back to them warped and distorted. "I don't think this is some nice welcome. Figures this kind of shit wouldn't stay behind in the nightmare."

Damp stone and the smell of mildew and something sweeter fill the air, and Mako shifts just a little closer to the comfortable bulk of his brother as they pass out of the light entirely into the silent shadows of the canyon. The raven statues were worrying enough, but the red in the water is getting thicker now, and that sweet scent starts to take on a familiar coppery tang. Mako's fingers curl tight on the wooden edge of the boat, itching for an oar or something to steer them. They're at the mercy of the current, and Mako hates it.

[ There's an address included, or just general directions, along with the time the party starts. ] Feel free to dress up or not - you know Ruby won't mind either way. You're also free to bring a present if you want to. If you want to bring one, but you're having trouble thinking of what to get her, you can ask me, I guess.

Let's do our best to make it fun for Ruby. She's had a really crappy time around this time last year, and I know she would love to be surrounded by her friends.

Hey, Mako, sorry to bug you.

[ This is more ominous than Mako would prefer. His hackles are already up. ]

Not bugging me. What's going on?

[ Wu bundles close to Mako's side, his arm threaded through Mako's as they walk down the boardwalk. It's become a ritual at this point, checking out what's new on the boardwalk as the month changes over. There isn't as much, this time, and it's incredibly cold, and Wu wonders how long they have to stay here.

But, no. They're here on a date, and Wu still feels like he owes Mako a lot after what he put Mako through last month. That sort of anxiety isn't unfamiliar to him, but he is usually able to keep it to himself, keeping it locked up inside so he doesn't inflict it on his friends, or, and especially, Mako. He doesn't need to hear Wu's insecurities, doesn't need to deal with them, because he's dealt with so much already, and yet.

So, for the last month, Wu hasn't exactly tried to hide how he's feeling. Mako said he hates that, hates when Wu pretends to be happy when he's not. He hasn't done the best job of it, hasn't always been honest, but he's trying, and he's able to call himself on it, sometimes, and Mako's called him on it, at others.

Being Trench, being not home, of course things aren't perfect. They never will be. But Wu is free and he gets to be with Mako and he doesn't have to be the King, and he has the Raccoon Room and friends and people who care about him, and despite all the horrible things that happen here, it's still better than home. ]

Can you imagine coming out of the ocean right now? [ He shudders, pressing close to Mako's side, the wind rushing over them in a cold burst ]

[ Mako can definitely imagine coming out of the ocean right now, mostly because he is so cold all the time even with the steady bubble of heat he's been quietly pushing through Wu's limbs this whole time. He grimaces at the idea of it, looking out over the frozen waves, wind-whipped and white-capped. Snow drifts around them in tiny flurries, making Trench look more like Republic City than ever, all dark stone slick and ice and cold.

He tightens his arm a bit around Wu, angling them toward a booth steaming into the cold winter air. ]

Kind of wondered if it would stop in the winter, but I should've figured the things running this place wouldn't be that kind. It never got this cold in the city. At least, the bay never froze over. That's Water Tribe stuff.

Did... you ever actually get to the poles?

[ Ah, he's using it like a letter. That was Mako instinct back when he first figured these things out, and he really can't blame him for it. ]

You don't have to be so formal on these. I know they're weird, but once you get used to them they're handy. I do run a safehouse network but it's more for emergency use. They're not really homes. If you want a house, you can just find an empty one.

[ Wait. Bolin had a lot of trouble with that. Think for a second, Mako. ]

I can show you a couple I know are free in the residential district. It's called Crenshaw. No application, you just figure out which one you want.

So a thing I was hoping wasn't going to come to pass has come to pass. There is a monster coming, the Leviathan. I've had vague premonitions, and Paul Atreides knows it. I'm going to fight. I'm going to try and use my Spirit Form to attack it.

I'm not sure how well this will work, and I know a lot of us won't be coming back from this. Just in case - remember that you're holding letters for me. One is for you. Hopefully, we won't need it.

I made it through. A lot of us didn't.

I'm going to sleep, because I can barely feel anything. I've asked Bolin to come to breakfast tomorrow, so I can tell him all about it - come too, please? If you're still Honeymooning or whatnot with Wu, ignore this - I'll catch you up soon.

[ Mako sees the first message almost as soon as he wakes up, and shoots back a message that he's sure Korra won't see. If she's already out there, doing her Korra thing, getting involved even when it's not her fight because she's the Avatar and she's Korra and she can't leave well enough alone—

Well, at least she'll do her best. Mako knows that much. He can count on Korra to fight harder than anybody.

So, first, early in the morning, as the sirens sound and the Leviathan breaches: ]

07:15: You'd better come back from this.
07:15: We need you alive, Korra.
07:16: I'll keep an eye on the battle. We've got some people hiding out in the Raccoon Room.

[ And then, he waits. Makes some drinks for the trickle of people flooding away from the shore, watches Wu try to entertain them. Does some of their accounting, tries not to worry, fails.

The second message comes, and this time, Mako responds immediately. ]

later: It worked! I'm proud of you. Also, that was stupid and risky. Still proud. I'll be there. You need anything? Are you hurt?

[ It does take Mako a little while to check his phone.

He's hungover, for one, and also he and Wu have been in bed for most of the day and that's the way he prefers it, frankly. There's a new closeness they have to settle into, exactly the honeymoon bliss Raleigh referenced.

However, at one point he does break to check his Omni, mostly because Wu does first and yelled about it. Mako wasn't, somehow, expecting a message of his own. ]

( It's a bit after the wedding (apologies, they were kind of dealing with Darth Maul Terrors!) but delivered to Mako and Wu one morning is a basket, within which are tucked a couple of gifts: a very soft, knitted yellow blanket, and two ancient-looking coins.

Sorry we weren't able to come to your wedding, but we wanted to send something for you guys. The blanket (yellow for good luck!) was knitted with a magical charm that means it will constantly stay warm. The coins come from a magical water wheel in John Constantine's shop. If you toss them into the water, you'll be granted a small wish apiece.

We hope these gifts will be of good use to you as you start this new chapter together.

Mako gets this text, and while it is objectively one of the funniest messages he has ever gotten he also has a deep, deep sympathy for Manabu, who gets in his own way at the best of times and who, according to Wu, has some weird ideas about the purpose of dating more at home with Grandma Yin than anything. ]
