★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Mako
Character Age: 24
Character Species: Human
Current Health: Healthy!
Outfit:

Character Canon:
Link to History: Mako’s history
Canon Point: After Ruins of the Empire, + Deerington & Deer Country CRAU
Canon Iteration: CRAU
Canon Iteration Explanation: Mako's coming here fresh from Deerington and then subsequently Deer Country! CRAU and a half, if you will.
Mako's notes are the best explanation of his Deer arc but basically:
September-October: turned up in Deerington with Korra, became a monster, met his new best friends Chloe and Kristoff
November: Korra disappeared, Mako was killed by Eddie in the ocean via electrocution, a bad time was had by all
December: Wu showed up, a deathflu'd Mako got lost in a blizzard and befriended Chuck and Raleigh
January: Mako went to the hotel along with everyone else, danced at a party, had some fun beach times
February: A lot of people's hearts were stolen, including Wu's, and then Mako and Wu kissed and became OFFICIAL. Also, Korra showed back up.
March: Wuko was officially a thing, Mako threw a party for Wu's birthday and then Wu died horribly; Mako banished his ghost with the help of Chuck and Raleigh and then repressed all his feelings about that.
April: Deerington turned into a desert, Mako's repressed feelings erupted into a fever after Wu shot him in the leg (by accident?) and his friend Lysithea died in front of him
May: The mist! Mako buried a lot of dead bodies and helped some Wastes in their final moments, generally became uncomfortably close to the idea of death, and made a choice to stay in Deerington with Wu, no matter what.
June: Mako and Wu immediately abandoned that choice once they learned going home was an option, tried to go home, and failed. Instead, they swam together to the shores of Deer Country, at which point they woke up, moved into an old theater, and promptly started a club called The Raccoon Room.

Deer Country: In Deer Country, Mako washed up as a Coldblood, with ice and electric powers to complement his already-present firebending. He set up a series of safehouses with Ruby Rose, an extension of the ones he'd helped run back in Deerington, and tried to figure out what he was going to do with his life in this awful new place. That mostly took the form of supporting Wu and his brother, Bolin, and trying to help Korra and Asami adjust to their new lives. He was happy, for the most part, except the lingering ghosts of purpose and responsibility chasing after him. Mako had no idea who he was without the roles he'd put himself into, and though Deer Country put him through a lot of horror while he tried to figure it out, he's still unclear. He ended his time there by getting psychically married to Wu in a giant blow-out wedding, and then running into the sea with him. Cinematic!

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:
  • observation & problem-solving
  • hand-to-hand combat
  • vehicles, in general (he's a great driver)
  • organizing
  • thievery
  • cooking
  • hustling
  • numbers & inventory
  • wayfinding

  • Canon Abilities:
🔴 Firebending Mako is an accomplished firebender, which means that he can create and control fire using his own body. Firebending is, essentially, magical martial arts: Mako uses a combination of boxing & Northern Shaolin kung fu to create and direct his flames. Firebending in general involves a lot of sharp, explosive movements, which Mako is quite good at, having competed professionally as a pro-bender. Firebending requires a lot of control, and the uses for it are really up to the creativity of the bender. They can do anything from kickicking long spirals of fire out of their feet to warming up cold tea. In addition to being able to create and control fire itself, firebenders also have some amount of control over heat: they can warm up the air around them or their own bodies. They naturally run hot, in fact.

Mako has quite a bit of raw power and is able to control and maintain streams of fire for a long time, long enough in some cases to be able to propel himself from the ground using the force and heat. His control is fine enough that he can make a tiny, focused dagger out of flames and strong enough that he can dispel the energy and fire from an explosion.

🔴 Lightningbending Lightning Bolt Zolt, the boss of one arm of the Triple Threat Triads, taught Mako how to generate and conduct electricity, which is a skill unique to a subset of firebenders. He can act as a conduit for existing electricity, channeling it through his body (specifically, through his hands) like a lightning rod. With enough focus and power, he can generate bolts of electricity for short periods of time himself. This is the technique he used to escape from Amon, and to kill Ming-Hua. He can do this under an immense amount of pressure and pain, having acted as a conduit to blow up the spirit vines in Kuvira’s mech until he was physically knocked out. He can aim these bolts and hit moving targets, and control the amount of electricity used, thanks to his Coldblood powers from Deer Country.

    CRAU Abilities:
🔴 Icebending Thanks to Deer Country, Mako's now a novice icebender! While he can't create or control water, he can make ice and direct it to some extent, using the same motions he uses to firebend, but wavier.

🔴 Squidbending Not really but he can absolutely turn into a squid when he... wants to. Do that. When in contact with water. Fun!

    Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Mako will be able to shapeshift into animals from his world only. He'll also take on some characteristics of a dragon: scales along his cheekbones and down his spine, over his shoulders, and a little on his hands; clawed fingers and toes; pointier teeth; pointed & slightly-frilled ears. He'll also, thanks to his Coldblood + being a dragon, really really need to bask in the sun to warm himself up. He's gonna love the desert.
Role Reasoning: Mako is best in a support role! He's intrinsically self-motivated, in it to make the world better for himself and the people he loves. He has no dreams of leadership, though he wants to be respected and heard, but he also doesn't want to burn everything down and is a strong believer in an orderly world. Being a Familiar will let him support the people around him with stronger, clearer dreams while being there for himself and for his friends.
    ★ Personality ★

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 1. Summarize your character's personality in general and what their full potential would look like to them and what they would be willing to go through to meet that potential and what gaining that potential would mean to them. 400-800 word requirement.

Mako was thrust into adulthood at the age of 8 after his parents were killed in front of him by firebenders. Suddenly, Mako was responsible for everything: keeping them alive, keeping his younger brother Bolin out of trouble, making sure they had a place to sleep and food. Keeping them safe and alive was Mako’s top priority, and for most of his life, that goal has stood above all other things.

He’s willing to do whatever is necessary in service of that goal, whether that’s joining a notorious criminal gang like the Triple-Threat Triads (for protection and some small sense of stability) or shoving someone into a wall with a fire-dagger aimed at their throat to get a friend back. Mako has even killed someone who was actively trying to kill his friends, although after electrocuting Ming-Hua, he was very clearly in shock about having done that, how far it went, and the fact that she actually died.

Mako took on the responsibilities and weight of their lives by developing a thick, world-weary shell. Where Bolin is quick to trust and make friends, Mako, for the most part, keeps his distance. It was an early and hard-earned lesson that any sign of weakness could and would be exploited. Decisions are made out of practicality and necessity, both for himself and for other people.

This extends to people. While Mako has a deep well of love for Bolin, his approach to others has been transactional at best. When he was torn between Asami and Korra, he didn’t use his own feelings to make his choice: he thought it “made more sense” for him to go for Asami, at least in part because she could provide them with a lot more than Korra ostensibly could. It’s a mindset stemming from his childhood in poverty, and with a gang: everything, including fellow humans, is an asset to be used. When he met Korra, he was surly and downright rude, focused on the pro-bending match he was about to fight, which had a lot more value to him than some random fangirl his brother had brought in.

Mako is both a trained and a natural caretaker. Having been the adult in the room for most of his life, his sense of duty and responsibility runs deep. In a world that placed extremely little value on him, Mako wove his skills into his self-worth. He makes himself indispensable so that no one can deny the value he brings to the table. While his confidence in his own abilities is warranted, Mako also gets in his own way. His need for control and his own ego lead him to step on toes. He was so sure of his theory that Varrick was behind the spate of attacks in season 2 that he launched his own unsanctioned investigation. He was right, but the way Mako handled it, his temper flaring thanks to a crumbling personal life, didn’t do him any favors.

Mako’s greatest weakness is the fact that his calm, carefully-controlled outer shell is just that: a shell. Mako is great under physical fire, but because he’s put his strongly-felt emotions to the side for so long that he never learned to handle them in a healthy way, they often erupt spectacularly. His lack of emotional engagement kept them alive, but it’s much less helpful when trying to deal with complex relationships. He made a mess of his relationship with Korra and Asami. He didn't want to hurt either of them but had no idea how to handle something so messy. Sure, Mako rides a motorcycle and direct lightning with his hands, but he’s also an awkward dork. He’s an introvert, and his words often fail him, especially when he’s uncomfortable.

Mako is at his best when he’s supporting the people he loves. Years of having a stable paycheck, friends, and finally, family have softened Mako’s harder edges. Underneath the tough shell, Mako is a deeply caring person with an unmatched sense of loyalty. He wants to make sure his friends and family are taken care of, and while he still often thinks he’s the best person to do that, he’s also learned to take a step back. He recognizes now how much keeping his thoughts and feelings to himself has made his life harder.

While in the series, he wasn't quite aware of his potential, his experiences in Deerington and Deer Country have given him a stronger picture of what he could have. Mako is willing to admit that the way he lived before isn't serving him anymore. It's going to be a learning process to let those old habits go, but he's trying. Mako is actively working to tear that wall down: that is his true potential. To soften up, to stop adopting the mantle of leadership and coldness and let the world be kind to him for once.

    • Additional Adjustments to include: Mako's notes are the best explanation of his Deer arc but basically:
September-October: turned up in Deerington with Korra, became a monster, met his new best friends Chloe and Kristoff

November: Korra disappeared, Mako was killed by Eddie in the ocean via electrocution, a bad time was had by all. This really messed him up for a while and made the reality of his situation sink in, but he also got lectured by a lot of people on trying to keep his problems to himself. He thought about that for a while afterward.

June: Mako and Wu immediately abandoned that choice once they learned going home was an option, tried to go home, and failed. They came back to Deerington with new resolve and stepped into the ocean together and into a new life.

    Deer Country Attributes

    • Canon Powers:
🔴 Firebending Mako is an accomplished firebender, which means that he can create and control fire using his own body. Firebending is, essentially, magical martial arts: Mako uses a combination of boxing & Northern Shaolin kung fu to create and direct his flames. Firebenders can use their chi, their innr energy, to create flames (the only benders able to actually create the element they control) and to move or extinguish them. Firebending in general involves a lot of sharp, explosive movements, which Mako is quite good at, having competed professionally as a pro-bender. Firebending requires a lot of control, and the uses for it are really up to the creativity of the bender. They can do anything from kicking long spirals of fire out of their feet to warming up cold tea. In addition to being able to create and control fire itself, firebenders also have some amount of control over heat: they can warm up the air around them or their own bodies. They naturally run hot, in fact, and have a bit of a natural resistance against poison. Firebenders are made stronger by the sun and by bodies like comets entering the atmosphere (see: Sozin's comet making all firebenders very powerful for the duration of its pass over the planet). They are made much weaker by the cold, and their bending can be weakened to the point of disappearing by prolonged cold, damp conditions. Their connection to the sun means that their bending is stronger during the day, when the sun is up, and weaker at night.

He can aim these bolts and hit moving targets, and control the amount of electricity used to some extent.

    • Blood Type: Coldblood
    • Omen: a small, cat-sized dragon named Zuko
    • Blessed Day: February 14th
    • Patron Pthumerian: Doorway
    • Blood Power Manifestation: Since the coldblood powerset intersects so perfectly with Mako's canon powers, they're going to essentially meld. His coldblood will grant him control over the full spectrum of temperature, and he'll now be able to generate ice as well as fire and electricity. Being coldblooded will expand his temperature range, connect him slightly more to the sun, and reduce the negative effect the cold has on his bending, so he'll be less useless in extreme cold. He'll have more acute control over electricity with the same amount of power, as well as finer control over smaller amounts of electricity (think sparks compared to lightning bolts). Compared to a normal coldblood, it will take him longer to wear out, since he has these powers anyway, but ice particularly will be hard for him to use, especially at first, and will present some difficulty unti he can master it.

Ice generation: Mako will be able to generate and manipulate ice, much like a waterbender. He'll be able to turn existing water into ice and then turn it back again, and also cause it to superheat and explode into steam. This will be done using his body, since his bending is the base of all of this, and is essentially an expansion of that.

Temperature control: Mako could already heat the air around him and liquids in his hands, and he'll now be able to do the opposite: pull heat out of the air and liquids, lowering the ambient temperature within about a five-foot radius.

Sun connection: Firebenders were already connected with the sun, and now Mako will be able to get some of his energy back through exposure to the sun for a prolonged period of time. Like a plant!

Notes on Deerington, as things happen. Objective: Keep track of what's happening and gather as much information as possible. It's the only way we're going to find our way out of this. If anything happens to me, there's a backup copy of these notes in my desk.

    Last updated: March

    September

Woke up with Korra and Naga in a town that calls itself Deerington. Told that:
  • it’s a dream
  • there’s no way out, but that people do leave
  • some people have been here for at least three years
  • Vira-Lorr believes that the kid behind all this—her name is Sodder—needs to be saved in order for us to be saved
  • the months are called something different here
  • the month called October, coming up next, is really bad. We're being told to prepare weeks in advance, stock up food & supplies and prepare ourselves for the worst.

    September 15th-30th
  • chased by a mob of monsters called zombies, seem to be weak to light
  • had to rescue another person from some gnomes
  • the “locals” (creepy pastel people) keep telling me to light up my porch. Bought a pumpkin, Korra wanted to carve it. We’ll see what happens.

(Note added later: we met my parents and Avatar Aang. Someone claiming to be them, over the pumpkins. Dad said he was proud. Pretty sure it’s a trick.)
  • October

October is here, and it's as bad as promised. At midnight Korra and I both experienced pain that I can't describe very well. It even got Naga. Changes include:
  • house looks different, inside and out
  • all the water is blood: taps, rivers, streams
  • no sun, and instead of the moon, eyes. DON'T look at them; they make your thoughts audible
  • monsters everywhere
  • stained glass with our own memories
  • I'm seeing shadows and hearing voices that have no source. I've checked everywhere

Bolin is here, and the last thing he remembers happened three years ago at home. He looks younger, too. Time doesn't make sense here, but at least I know he's safe.

Note: walking through any door has about a 50% chance of shoving you into a tiny elevator that tries to drown you in blood.

Korra and I are running out of medical supplies. No one has been able to sleep. I'm going to get more
  • ran into Lysithea. We got trapped with a monster that is apparently from her home and used to be a person, had to take it out. Lysithea took down a power line to do it
  • library seems to be a safe space
  • circles of tiny skeletons are also safe, will give you useful stuff
  • Shiro has been here a long time, knows what he's doing.

something happened to Korra. she turned into a dark spirit. I'm going after her

    it happened to me too

Okay. I've recovered, I'm in the library. It's safe here. This creature is encouraging us to tell each other stories, so I'm going to write down what happened to avoid it in the future. Korra turned into a dark spirit. She looked like Unalaq, and she thought that I was Zaheer, tried to attack me until she changed. Got big enough to throw me, and threw me into a house.

I woke up and tried to find her, but this black stuff formed around me, like ink, but it was sticking to me, and I could feel it happening but I couldn't do anything to stop it. I turned into some giant, fiery thing, and I knew I had to burn down as much as I could. It was like I could sense the layers in Deerington, and I had to tear them apart. I would have stayed like that, completely powerless, if Kristoff hadn't found my tattoo (it peeled off) and showed up in my head to bring me back to myself. I don't know what I would do without him. I'm staying in the library for the rest of the month unless I can help other people turn back.

There are these slits of light in the sky, and screaming. It can't mean anything good but no one has an explanation. It's like everything I thought I was doing as that thing actually did something.
  • November

All those earthquakes and strips of light got this place back to normal, kind of. The maps all changed: the river seems to be gone, and more importantly, there are sinkholes.
  • the one by the hospital was here before
  • the one by the mountain has standing stones. Korra discovered if you meditate by them, your powers stabilize, but you're wrecked for a while afterwards. So far it seems to be about a day. If you go the other direction, there's an underground ocean, and fruits that turn you into some kind of mer-creature.
  • I explored with Rei, and if you go far enough, there's another Deerington full of deer statues. Apparently, when you die, one of these appears. There are a lot. More than there are current Sleepers. They look like they've been here for ages.
  • some of those weird light slivers are still around. It looks like they lead to another world, or another layer?
  • there's a skeleton in our backyard
  • The Dog-Keeper gave us backpacks with survival equipment. Like he thinks we're going to need them. He seems to the most helpful of Deerington's residents.

Korra is gone. I watched it happen. It was like she exploded. I need to make sure
  • December

I died. Made the mistake of looking for Korra, and I wasn't thinking clearly. Went into the trench, and somebody was there. He wasn't acting like himself. Shocked me. I died the same way Ming-Hua did exactly 7 days ago.
    Korra is still gone.
Death in this town isn't permanent. It makes you sick the first time it happens. You come back in a field that goes on as far as you can see. There's this creature, like this world's deer but with a mask, and a massive black tree. If it offers you fruit, eat it: it brings you back.
  • food seems to do something here, look into that later? we were told eat to food from the jar in the baskets when we first arrived
  • The Delivery Dogs are gone. The Fire Station shows signs that someone has been living there, even though it's covered in dust.
  • in the fire station is a book with all the dates people have appeared and disappeared and reappeared. way too detailed. someone is keeping track?
  • I brought home a collar. It was the only thing I could take with me. "If found, please return to the people" is printed on the back.

  • Wu is here. Hou-Ting Wu. Another person from home.
  • the stars are moving

  • There's no justice system in Deerington, but there can't be. I talked to the person who killed me. He claims he was possessed. That just believing a thing like that can happen makes it happen.
The 15th Things get really bad around this time of the month. A running list:
  • Ice zombies of anything from people to animals. Controlled by something? They're smart.
  • ended up in a car, driving through a blizzard, convinced I was breaking up with Wu. It happened three times, and we crashed every time. The illusion broke when we crashed. Wu was injured
  • trapped in a house that made me forget who I was and what I was doing. It was like being in a dream. Nobody knew who they were, but the houses were creepy and filled with photos of people's families and things I remembered.
  • Vira-Lorr and Lysithea posed a theory: that we have to know who we are and understand ourselves. Wu said something similar, that this place is testing us. We're the key to something.
  • January

  • Woke up to a message from Fern. Varian was trapped in something like a spirit cocoon. I went to investigate, but he seemed unhurt
  • covered in weird veins, it looked like he was sleeping
  • On day 6 of January, I walked outside to go to work and ended up trapped with a lot of other people at the Grady Hotel. There's a funeral program with my name on it, talking like I'm dead. Apparently my funeral is in 3 weeks. That can't mean anything good.
  • are we being herded? does Sodder want us safe, or does someone want us in one place to take us out? are we being distracted from something?
  • There's going to be a party here, apparently
  • it's too perfect

  • Varian woke up. Said he went home, had his leg back and everything, lived through several months without remembering Deerington, and then woke back up after only 3 days here. mid-month
  • If you walk away from the hotel, you end up at a beach. I've been twice, and I keep forgetting my notebook, no matter how hard I try to remember it. We're definitely being distracted
  • Diarmuid has been collecting information. Mother Superior—who hates us, by the way—is definitely trying to keep us contained for some reason. and Sodder's mother loves us and likes music. I need to go see her.
  • The party was everything you'd want a party to be, but the way we woke up was something else. Deerington was empty and completely dark.
  • I don't think this is a dream. There are people here who can't be dreaming. They're dead at home, or they don't have a home to go back to.
  • February

February started badly. I was paralyzed. Forgot who I was.
  • that's happening a lot, recently, between the houses and the cars and that party
  • a voice said "you will be reborn soon"
  • what if we aren't dreaming at all? What if there's another Mako back home who's just living his life?

  • February 3rd
Put on the collar and woke up as a dog in a place called Nome, Alaska. With the Dog-Keeper. It was a memory of another time and place.
  • he talked to Sodder, before she fell asleep. Seems like they were friends. She wanted to be a firefighter, too. Thought they were heroes
  • Deerington burned after Sodder fell asleep. The townspeople thought she shouldn't have been.
  • there are more kids. The Dog Keeper really hammered that home. It isn't just Sodder, and we're going to have to make a choice. We need more information about that choice.
  • I woke up with a vial of hair. The Dog Keeper said it would be important, that we would need something real.

  • February 9th
  • Wu's heart was in a box in my house. I had to put it back in his chest. He wasn't himself without it. Why is this not the weirdest thing anymore? He's fine now.
  • the Wastes keep giving me things that they claim are real. They know more than they let on. Something is different about them versus us. It's like we break the dream by being here. Is that why Mother Superior hates us?

  • February 11th
Korra is here again. She doesn't remember anything, but she does know what happened with the coup, which is more than Wu and I remember. I didn't seem any different at home. Somehow.
  • new theory: we aren't dreaming at all.
    February 12th
Bill Cipher, Varian, Fern, and Ford are all working on a way to stabilize this place. Something with portals and getting through all the layers at once, fighting all the guardians. It's not going to work.
  • it didn't work
  • Bill was lying
  • I think they almost broke Deerington

  • February 25th
The rest of this month was bad. These flowers with eyes in them sprouted around town at the same time as living rodent skeletons, also covered in flowers. If you touched or looked at the flowers, you'd end up physically in either your memory or someone else's. I saw some things I'd rather not rememeber.
Something made alternate versions of some people appear. It happened to me. Still trying to figure out how. Another version of me who thought he was a nonbender from a place called New York City showed up, claiming to be me.
He got bitten. By one of the rats, and ended up trying to control Chloe Price and keeping Wu locked in his own house. He thought they were in danger.
I can't let that happen again. Wu had to destroy him by destroying the flower he was holding. I don't want to know what he would have done if Wu hadn't done that. The rats got Raleigh, too, made him threaten us, and for some reason I have that other me's memories in my head.
  • possible that we really are other versions, if one of them could show up here.
  • I need to know more about how time works in other worlds
  • March

    The dream is breaking.
A tentacle came out of the floor to give me a letter. Apparently the Mayor wants to have some Sleepers over for tea on the 12th. He doesn't trust Mother Superior, thinks she's breaking through, and wants to get us to the Lab for some reason. Says it won't be easy.
  • possible that it's a trap
  • we need more information so I need to go

  • March 3rd
  • flowers & rats disappearing, thankfully
  • objects and people have started falling from the sky & slamming into things
  • if the dream is breaking, what happens to our supplies? People need to be prepared
  • something crashing & thundering in the distance occasionally

  • March 5th
  • Wrote up a list of necessary supplies and asked everyone to start stocking up (did not cause a panic, no matter what Wu said)
  • also asked about timelines in different worlds to find patterns
  • need to set up supply caches around town; Ruby's given me a list of people to follow up with

  • Time Notes
  • fixed points in time, unchangeable or hard to change, common across worlds. Manabu suggests "fate" or "destiny"
  • manipulating or changing time more common than assumed
  • in some cases if fixed points that "need" to happen are changed, time will try to fix itself
  • described as a river in many cases. or a ball of yarn.
  • some worlds have experience with alternate universes or versions of people, sometimes created by making one decision and not the other

  • March 10th
  • went looking for the sound with Fern, found something eating holes in the town. Not just food. Buildings, trees, animals.
  • clustered around places with a lot of deer statues and the sinkholes. source of most horrible things?
  • found massive creatures. don't seem to want to hurt us, but were willing to... latch onto us somehow

  • March 12th
Tea party time. I'll report back when I get back. This is probably a trap.
    March 20th
finally got back from the Lab. I had to go multiple times. No Fluids, no notebooks, nothing. The Mayor warned us.
  • trapped in a facility, given pills
  • women with blurry faces tried to convince all of us we were dreaming or making deerington and our own worlds up
  • the more pills you took the easier it was to believe
  • had to escape through the vents, gathered hair like the Dog Keeper asked we passed:
  • a man's body, covered in veins, on a bench
  • what looked like Cynthia Sodder, rocking a baby, hoping everything would be alright. a memory?
  • Mother Superior, trying to wake up. She looked bad. Bloody and unhinged.
  • the Dog Keeper. recognized us, gave us more hair and told us it was important
  • Ramona, in a straitjacket, screaming that Sodder is the only reason we're all here and that she has to live
  • an illusion of Sodder's. she was drawing. asked what kind of monster we would make.
  • a mirror. hair that might be mine & Wu's?

  • Time for Wu's birthday
    March 23rd
Wu was killed by Sam Winchester
    March 23rd
Kristoff is gone. So are Anna and Chloe. So is Bolin

    Shiro's Notes about Mother Superior

She was the right hand of Julia Sodder's grandmother. Part of some race of ... giant people. Pthumerian? Pumerian? It's spelled right in Peter's notes. Anyway - the Pthumerian Queen wanted to make some kind of god. She did a ritual with the moon, and Mother Superior helped.

I ... don't know what happened with her between now and then, but as far as I know, she's the one responsible for locking Julia away. Putting her in whatever state she's in now. And Mother Superior hates us. She's cut off our supplies, made us fight to the death, put us on trial

She's done everything she can to try and wipe us out.

    Follow You Anywhere
Bolin [personal profile] pabugotmoves Mako's brother. He would do anything for this dork. Loves Bolin arguably more than he loves anyone else in the world, no matter how much he'd sometimes like to shake Bo until he listens to sense.
Wu [personal profile] royalfling Apparently, Mako's in love with Wu. Who knew? (Wu knew. Other people probably knew. Mako was maybe the last to know). Wu impresses him more and more every day, and makes the world seem like a simpler, easier place to live. He's optimistic and kind and charming and hilarious, even if sometimes he can be kind of self-centered. Mako knows how hard he's trying, and has seen how much he's grown, and he loves Wu for it.
Korra [personal profile] avatar_state Mako's best friend, ex-girlfriend, and moral compass. Korra has been in Deerington twice, and both times he's been both horrified that she has to deal with this place and glad that her rock-solid self is here. Korra changed his life, wormed her way into becoming family, and that's where she'll stay. Mako would literally follow her anywhere. It's a promise.
Kristoff [personal profile] arendelicious Mako's first and best friend in Deerington. Kristoff understood him on a level he's never been understood before. He's gone, and that's left a hole in Mako's life. He's trying to remember to talk about his emotions, because it's what Kristoff would have wanted.
Chloe Price [personal profile] tagartist Mako formed an unexpectedly deep friendship with Chloe by not being a fuckboy, and now they're in this for life? She got him. A fellow cynic with issues and a big heart. She's gone from Deerington, but Mako keeps her notes alive along with her memory. Her loss is still too big for him to deal with.
Raleigh Becket [personal profile] righthemisphere Another unexpectedly deep friendship. Raleigh has a lot in common with Mako, for someone with a completely different life. He's helped Mako more times than Mako can count, and while Mako still doesn't get why, he's glad for Raleigh's steady presence in his life and hopes he can be a rock for Raleigh, too.
    Friends
Chuck [personal profile] suicidemission Chuck is Raleigh's—partner? Or something. Mako isn't sure, but Chuck has been there for him nearly as much as Raleigh has, and he's Wu's best friend, which means he's good in Mako's book. Chuck is dead back in his world, which means Deerington is all he has. Mako wants to keep his second chance alive for him.
Shiro [personal profile] shiro2hero Mako sees a lot of familiar things in Shiro. He takes on too much, but he's a strong and capable figure who's made a lot of promises, and Mako just hopes he can help Shiro keep him. He'd like to be more like Shiro, and looks up to him quite a bit.
Varian [personal profile] droptheious A fellow cynic and a clearly-smart kid. Mako trusts his opinions, even if he questions his judgment about soup. And magical blizzards. Maybe Varian needs some looking-after.
Vyng Vang Zoomba [personal profile] spiritwalks Somehow, Vyng and Mako understand each other. They have such vastly different lives, but trauma-bonding about your deepest regrets over a funeral will do that to you? Vyng understands him, and Mako understands Vyng, and while it can be uncomfortable to be seen like that, he's kind of glad for it.
Lysithea von Ordelia [personal profile] morethanachild One of the first people he met in Deerington, Lysithea has also become one of Mako's close friends. She's strong and smart and extremely capable, and now that Mako knows just how much weight is on her future, he wants to do everything he can do help her live in the meantime. He trusts her opinion 100%.
    Good to Know
Mirai Akarui [personal profile] fatedmahou Mako kept running into Mirai in increasingly awful situations, as is normal for Deerington. She's a sweet girl but she puts way too much responsibility on her own shoulders, and after learning why, Mako wants to lighten that for her. He definitely wants to look out for her.
Evelyn Carnahan [personal profile] egyptologist A very smart person who nonetheless apparently caused a lot of chaos by reading from a cursed book. Mako broke her heart in a car in December, and still feels bad about it. She's clearly smart, and she works with Wu. Mako wants to get to know her better: she seems kind of brilliant. Reminds him of Asami.
Bella Swan [personal profile] littlelesshelpless They're in at least two clubs, and neither of them are good, but that's okay. Bella fixed his bike and brought him soup. She's good people. He wants to know more.
Rei Hino [personal profile] incandescentfaith A powerful person with a lot on her shoulders. Mako would fight next to Rei any day. The more he learns about her, the more he respects her.
David Alleyne [personal profile] helpdesk_hero It's complicated. David is an interesting guy, and a detective, and way too kind. Mako has no idea how he feels right now, but he's pretty sure he owes David an apology and some food.
Manabu Yuuki [personal profile] siriusly A fellow detective who Mako met soon after he got to Deerington, Manabu seems kind of jumpy but he wants to help out, and that means a lot to Mako. They've gotten into a lot of shit very fast, and he's clearly helpful in a pinch. They already know a lot about each other.
Fern [personal profile] laminae Fern is Mako's benchmark for the weirdness of Deerington: can't get much weirder than a kid made of grass, right? He's a good kid who knows a lot about weapons and is teaching Mako to use them.
Ruby Rose [personal profile] clickclickbloom Ruby clearly has a lot on her shoulders. She reminds Mako of Korra when he first met her: impulsive and fiercely compassionate, dedicated to helping people around her, even if sometimes the way she does it gives Mako a headache. A trustworthy partner and someone he's glad to have around.
Lance [profile] ironlionzion Lance reminds him a little bit of Bolin, but he seems like a good guy, even if he kind of gets on Mako's nerves for some reason.
Orpheus [personal profile] themuseabandonsyou Orpheus calmed down a vicious three-headed dog with music, which won Mako's respect, and then subsequently serenaded him, claiming he was in love (it was a rat. Deerington things). He reminds Mako of Wu, and eventually Mako will stop being awkward around him. Probably.
Glitch [personal profile] glitchinthesystem Glitch reminds Mako a lot of himself, and that's kind of uncomfortable sometime. The kid has a lot of people looking out for him, but Mako keeps an eye on him to make sure he's okay all the same. Call it big-brother instinct.
Eddie Kaspbrak [personal profile] clussy The real it's complicated. Eddie seems like a good kid with a lot of depth, but he killed Mako in cold blood in November 2020. Even so, there's a weird kind of respect there now. Mako knows what Deerington can make you do, and Eddie is both dangerous and good resource.
Aoyagi Ritsuka [personal profile] in_loveless_memory Ritsuka is a sad kid with some pretty terrible people in his life, back home. Mako wants to prove that his real big brother is a shithead. Maybe be a better one to him.

History: Avatar Wiki page about Mako

    CRAU History and Impact: N/A
    Personality:

    > So, I understand you're dirt poor.

Mako’s personality has been shaped by his admittedly tough life. He was thrust into adulthood at the age of 8 after his parents were killed in front of him by firebenders. Bolin, his younger brother and for years his only known remaining family, was only 6 years old. Suddenly, Mako was responsible for everything: keeping them alive, keeping Bolin out of trouble, making sure they had a place to sleep and enough food to keep them going. In his mind, he was the only thing standing between Bolin and death. Keeping them safe and alive was Mako’s top priority, and for most of his life, that goal has stood above all other things.

He’s willing to do whatever is necessary in service of that goal, whether that’s joining a notorious criminal gang like the Triple-Threat Triads (for protection and some small sense of stability) or shoving someone into a wall with a fire-dagger aimed at their throat to get a friend back (it’s happened more than once).

He keeps the majority of his thoughts and feelings to himself, and places very little weight on emotion in general. Decisions are made out of practicality and necessity, both for himself and for other people.

This extends to people. While Mako has a deep well of love for Bolin, for most of his life, his approach to others has been transactional at best. The world boils down in his mind to “hustle or be hustled”. Mako lets Bolin be the emotional heart of their tiny family and shuts his own feelings away from himself. When he met Korra, he was surly and downright rude, focused on the pro-bending match he was about to fight, which had a lot more value to him than (at the time) some random fangirl his brother had brought in.

    > Don't worry about it. I'll figure something out. I always do.

Mako is both a trained and a natural caretaker. He’s been the adult in the room for most of his life, and made sure that he and Bolin ate, often doing the cooking for the both of them, and that they got paid and paid their bills. His sense of duty and responsibility runs deep. He jumped into getting a job to pay their entrance fee into the pro-bending tournament without a second thought, and without even asking Bolin to contribute. In a world that placed extremely little value on two nobody street-rats, Mako’s usefulness and skills wove into his sense of self-worth. He makes himself indispensable so that no one can deny the value he brings to the table.

Mako has quite a bit of confidence in his own abilities. While that is both warranted (he’s a dedicated, talented bender and a solid detective) and served him well for a long time, it also means that Mako gets in his own way. His need for control, born from having so little over his life for so long, and his own ego lead him to step on toes trying to take situations into his own hands. He was so sure of his theory that Varrick was somehow behind the spate of attacks in season 2 that he launched his own, unsanctioned investigation despite being told to leave it. While the theory turned out to be correct, the way Mako handled it, with his temper flaring thanks to a crumbling personal life and a brewing civil war, didn’t do him any favors.

    > You know, it seems like you're so afraid to disappoint anyone that you end up disappointing everyone.

One of Mako’s greatest weaknesses is the fact that his calm, carefully-controlled outer shell is just that: a shell, which can and has been cracked. Mako is great under physical fire, but because he’s put his strongly-felt emotions to the side for so long that he never learned to handle them in a healthy way, they often erupt spectacularly. He puts so much pressure on himself to be responsible and take care of everyone around him that he ends up not taking care of himself, and when the shell cracks, it cracks hard.

While his lack of emotional engagement kept them alive (no time to process grief when your little brother is starving and so are you) it’s much less helpful when trying to deal with complex relationships. He made an absolute mess of everything with Korra and Asami, and then had no idea how to handle it afterwards. Things got awkward, and Mako’s outward coolness broke entirely down. He didn’t want to hurt either Korra and Asami, especially since, for the first time since he was a kid, Mako actually had some emotional skin in the game. Korra’s impact on his life can’t be overstated. His relationship with her was the first one, besides Bolin, that wasn’t based on the value they mutually brought each other. Korra is compassionate just to be compassionate, caring for the sake of it, and willing to fight for those things. She gave Mako a new model, and something to aspire to.

After meeting her, Mako started trying a lot harder. He let down his walls, and while his self-serious nature is something that can’t really be changed, he started trying to let people in.

    > Of course, Korra. Avatar. Avatar Korra.

For all his coolness on the surface, Mako has a lot more in common with his brother than he lets on. Sure, he rides a motorcycle and he’s a detective and he can direct lightning with his hands, but he’s also kind of a huge dork. His first few months as a beat cop, he wrote a list of cool one-liners that he’d run by Korra. When Asami hit him with her scooter, she shocked all the collectedness out of him (with her good hair and ridiculous face), turning him into a red-faced mess entirely too aware of his own hands. He’s an introvert, and his words often fail him spectacularly, especially when he’s uncomfortable (which is often. Mako may not be the most emotionally aware, but when he feels uncomfortable or unsure it radiates through his entire being). Mako takes himself quite seriously, and as such, is easily needled (see: being painfully awkward at Korra and Asami, and not at all knowing how to take the teasing he thus receives).

In the end, Mako is at his best when he’s playing a role that comes naturally to him: supporting the people he loves. Years of finally having a stable paycheck, solid friends, and finally finding the rest of his family in Ba Sing Se have softened Mako’s harder edges. Underneath the tough, brooding shell he put up to survive, Mako is a deeply caring person with an unmatched sense of loyalty. He wants to make sure his friends and family are taken care of, and while he still often thinks he’s the best person to do that, he’s also learned to take a step back. He recognizes, at the end of the series, how much keeping his thoughts and feelings to himself has made his life harder. With the help of the people who love him too, Mako is actively working to tear that wall down, bit by bit.

    Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:

He can aim these bolts and hit moving targets, and control the amount of electricity used to some extent.

How will his powers warp? Mako will have significantly less fine control over his lightning and firebending, and they may spontaneously erupt, or come out much stronger or weaker or in different shapes than he intends. He’ll have to work much harder, especially at the beginning, to be able to do what he can in canon. Because fire is so connected to emotions, he will heat things up or make things burst into flames when he’s feeling strongly, and during other emotionally tough-times he may not be able to access his bending at all, or to a much lower degree (think Zuko when he lost his firebending due to losing his core of rage, if that rings any bells!) Open to warping his powers more, if necessary!

    Other Abilities:

Hand-to-hand combat In addition to his bending, Mako is a very skilled hand-to-hand fighter. He’s very cool under pressure, and thinks on his feet. There is a solid amount of power behind his punches and kicks. He knows how to use his opponents against themselves, throwing them using their own weight and hitting them where it hurts most. Given that he learned these skills on the streets and from pro-bending, Mako’s not above fighting dirty when he has to.

Observation Mako’s a detective, and a good one, at that. He’s always paying close attention to his surroundings, and often notices things other people don’t, making connections between things like the controlled blasts on the set of a mover and the remote detonation of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center. He’s also fairly good at reading people, having been able to determine that the guard suspected of letting the Red Lotus into Zaofu was being set up by Ai-Wei.

Vehicles Mako’s good on a motorcycle, having driven one for a while as a beat cop. He was also able to figure out how to pilot an airship soon after encountering it, so he’s pretty good at piecing together how machines work and making them do what he wants.

Other stuff After living on the street so long, Mako’s an adaptable person. He’s good with maps, has a solid sense of spatial awareness, and can cook well, having provided for his brother for years. He’s also pretty good at hustling and scamming people out of their money, although those days are behind him.

    Weaknesses Emotions, in general.

Inventory: He’s a former street-rat, so he doesn’t have much, but:
🔴 his Republic City Police Uniform
🔴 Walkie-talkie that may or may not actually work anymore
🔴 the only other outfit he owns aka one change of normal clothes
🔴 a photo of Team Avatar (himself, Bolin, Korra, and Asami) from Varrick’s wedding, in black and white, with all of them smiling in their formalwear
🔴 pomade (for both his hair and his eyebrows. You think those shark brows are natural?)

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Absolutely, don’t mind them one bit, can’t wait to explore his reaction to that.

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: In games, I’m really interested in testing characters. I like to see how they react to horrible things, and the ways that they cope with those horrible things happening over and over again. Will they give up hope? Get jaded? Decide to hope even more? I think it’s interesting to push them in ways that they might not be pushed in their own canons, back them into corners, and see what happens.

Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Overly-described gore, especially anything with impaling or people burning alive

Additional Information: None that I can think of!
