[ Mako now has two very cool lamps in his room, and he's... sort of thrilled about it.
He didn't have things for most of his life—woke up here with his clothes and a few photos and that was about the sum total of his possessions—and so the concept is still novel. That someone got this thing for him, clearly for him, because it looks like fire, and it looks hand-carved.
Mako lights it with a small smile, places it right by his beside and turns out all the other lights, and takes a picture. It glows a quiet red in a dark room, the outline of a pillow just visible next to it.
He sends this photo to Fern a few hours later, along with: ]

i carved the wood part
and stuck a lamp from the junkyard inside it
Wu also said you made the buns he left me for Christmas

[ I.e. if Mako attempted to carve something it would look like a sad hunk of wood with some nicks out of it, not like an actual thing like this one.
He smiles a bit at the compliment, too. ]
Yeah, I made extra so that Wu had a lot to give to people. I didn't get a chance to make stuff like that at home very often. Too complicated.

i'm no engineer but i've built stuff before
[It usually doesn't work out this well, but this was pretty simple to put together since all the lamp parts already worked.]

It's really not that impressive. It's heat, and a recipe, and practice. You could probably learn.

getting the lamp part together and making sure it works was hard
